UNAIDS Is A Trusted Source On HIV Information Regarding African Countries
UNAIDS provides support to HIV responses in the various low and middle income Africa countries. Full HIV information about every region, prevention programmes in place, and also the success stories are available at the UNAIDS website. Governments and non-governmental organisations are invited to submit their HIV information. It is one organisation committed to collaboration as the fight against AIDS can only be won if people become more informed regarding the spreading of the disease. It is imperative to have accurate and up to date HIV information whether a company is involved in prevention of AIDS or simply want HIV information statistics.

Zambia, as one of the poorest countries in Africa struggles to keep the spreading of HIV and AIDS at bay. The country relies heavily on donors to fund their AIDS treatments. As such should any of the donors withdraw their assistance and involvement, the complete progress already made against the disease in the country can be wiped out. The Southern African AIDS Trust operating in Zambia supports community AIDS treatment programmes in addition to the building of HIV awareness amongst community members. Regional and grass root level involvement in prevention as well as AID treatment programmes should become priority in the country in order to win the fight against the dreadful disease.
HIV Treatments In Rwanda Military To Reduce Spreading Of The Disease
There have been a number of successful HIV treatment programs in Africa throughout the past few years. One example of the success of HIV treatments is that of the Rwandan Military where an HIV treatment program is funded by the USA Department and overseen through a university by the name of “Charles Drew University.” Their ambitious and rather innovative HIV treatment programme has now fully reached every infected soldier in the country. At the same time there are institutions in African countries which have no proper HIV treatments in place including some of the prisons in Uganda. It is imperative to develop a well structured plan for prevention and cure of the disease.

Uganda prison wardens are guilty of HIV discrimination practices according to inmates of the Mubuku prison in Kasese. According to the prisoners, the HIV infected prisoners are subjected to hard labour while they are seriously ill. The prison wardens and officers who have been alleged to be involved in HIV discrimination practices, have been noted to state that it is the mistake of inmates that they have been infected with HIV and as such they don’t get special treatment. Uganda prison conditions are terrible with overcrowding and over utilization of resources leading to unhygienic conditions in the prisons. This in turn creates the ideal conditions for the outbreak of TB and other illnesses. Since the HIV infected prisoners don’t receive proper nutrition and have to work hard under dreadful circumstances, their already vulnerable immune systems cannot protect them against such diseases.
AIDS Discrimination Practices Alive & Well In Africa
AIDS discrimination practices at grass root level right up to employment and government levels are still a reality in many African countries. Many workers face legal problems regarding their AIDS status and in numerous instances, domestic workers in for instance, South Africa find that once their employers find out about their HIV or AIDS status that they find reason to let them go. It is imperative for governments to create legislation against AIDS discrimination in the workplace, schools and also build awareness of the illness in communities. In some instances, the immediate communities reject AIDS infected persons out of fear of infection, the stigma that is associated with the disease, and because of ignorance of how it is transmitted from one person to another.

South Africa is the country with the highest rate of HIV infection despite an increase in HIV awareness campaigns. Although certainly a far way from winning the fight against HIV, the numerous HIV awareness programmes in the country targeting the youth, ensure that the stigma surrounding HIV infection and also the myths regarding the methods of infection are addressed. Elsewhere in Africa, HIV awareness programmes and prevention plans have made inroads in the fight against the disease. Tanzania is the latest country to be applauded for their success in increasing the availability of antiretroviral drugs to infected persons, limiting the risks of mother to child transmission of HIV, and in communicating to the youth the importance of HIV prevention methods.
HIV Leadership Is Needed In The Fight Against HIV/AIDS
Strong HIV leadership is needed from African countries to tackle the pandemic of HIV/AIDS head on. Although numerous countries have made inroads in the fight against HIV/AIDS because of strong HIV leadership displayed, there are still countries which take on the role of victim waiting for someone to fix the problem, rather than actively provide HIV leadership through policies, government awareness programs, treatment accessibility, and general information to the public. Uganda has been applauded on several occasions for its efforts to eradicate the disease. At the same time though, prisons in the country are seen as breeding grounds for disease and HIV infections because of the unhygienic state of their prisons.

Tanzania was recently applauded by the UN deputy secretary Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro for their outstanding efforts to stop the spreading of the disease. Tanzania has put in place several HIV prevention strategies of which an awareness campaign amongst the youth has played an important role as well as the setting up of HIV Prevention programmes at clinics to minimize the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children. In addition Tanzania has also made available antiretroviral drugs to other citizens infected with the disease. With their HIV prevention efforts on all levels they are making inroads against the disease. Globally more than six million people received antiretroviral treatments in 2010.
AIDS Awareness In Tanzania On The Increase
Tanzania has recently made headlines with their AIDS awareness programmes which have proven to be tremendously successful. The youth of country are enthusiastic in fighting the disease and show incredible responsibility in their approach regarding HIV/AIDS. The country has tackled the problem heads on and thereby increasing not only AIDS awareness, but also responsible living to prevent the spreading of the disease. More than 51% of the people living with HIV or AIDS in the country receive the required antiretroviral treatment. This is truly a remarkable change from the 2004 figure of absolutely no one receiving the treatment. They have also improved their mother to child HIV transmission prevention programmes reaching more than two thirds of infected mothers in 2010.
