Inside A Rehab Centre – Do You Know All You Need To Know?

Have you ever wondered what goes on in an addiction treatment facility? Where once an addiction to drugs or alcohol was treated as an aberration that would only be cured by strict discipline and “cold turkey”, today’s rehab centre approaches things in a radically different fashion and, thankfully, it is also considerably more effective.

The modern view of addiction is that it is an illness that, although not actually curable, may be controlled through a combination of medical, psychological and spiritual interventions that will, ultimately, assist the addict to take control of his or her life and to resume a normal role in society.

Comfortable and relaxing surroundings, a regime of healthy eating, exercise and occupational therapy combined with medication, psychological and spiritual counselling are providing really gratifying results at some of the country’s more progressive treatment centres today.

Principles Of Effective Addiction Rehab

It takes far more than a rap over the knuckles and a packet of pills to reverse the damage wrought by years of addiction. The first requirement is to deal with the dependency and the general health of the patient. This generally means a controlled course of detoxification backed up by medication to control withdrawal symptoms.

Counselling remains an important feature of any course of addiction rehab. Initially it will be aimed at uncovering the factors that may have led to addiction and helping the patient to develop more appropriate responses to them. Later it will be directed at building a new self-image based upon love, trust and honesty and will often be undertaken by the centre’s chaplain or other spiritual counsellor.

This holistic treatment of addiction is now widely adopted by the better treatment centres with markedly improved results.

A New Approach To Drug Addiction Rehab

During the early years of treating drug addiction, multiple relapses tended to be the rule rather than the exception and relatively few patients managed to achieve a lasting recovery despite the sincere efforts of those dedicated to their care.

Studies of addiction and the commonly accepted interventions have led to a revision to the manner in which centres conduct drug addiction rehab today. Modifications of tried and tested principles such as the 12-step programme developed by Alcoholic Anonymous retain an important role and have been augmented by such innovations as individual treatment programmes and a three-pronged therapeutic regimen of medical, psychological and spiritual interventions.

This new attitude to the rehabilitation of addicts is paying dividends at participating centres and is achieving sustained recoveries among the majority of admissions.

An Exceptional Rehab Clinic

In the simplest terms, an exceptional addiction treatment facility must be one that produces better than average results and I have certainly identified a number of centres that do. What, then, actually explains why any given rehab clinic is able to achieve a better recovery record?

One can be certain that the majority of centres are manned by dedicated carers and that they share the same goals. However, not all centres pursue these goals in the same fashion or have the same facilities at their disposal.

My observations suggest that the centres that adopt a more holistic treatment philosophy, attending to the spiritual as well as the medical and psychological needs of an addict, are definitely experiencing improved results.

A restful environment, a programme of healthy activities and diet and long-term, individual treatments typify the best of these facilities.

Rehab Treatment Is Invaluable

Recently, there have been reports on the alarming rate at which drug and alcohol abuse has been increasing around the world. These reports also underline the fact that the average age of addicts is falling and that new and even more dangerous substances are appearing in the narcotics market.

In efforts to combat this worrying trend, many public and private health services have been funding research into addiction and additional facilities for rehab treatment. Addiction therapy has undergone considerable changes since the earliest, organised efforts to help addict. Today’s clinics are providing an invaluable service to the community as a whole by saving lives and returning recovering addicts to a normal, productive life.

In combat with this drug on abuse, South Africa has some pretty exceptional facilities that offer a vital lifeline for the victims of substance abuse.

Cocaine Rehab Offers Hope

The DEA classifies cocaine as a schedule II drug. This means that it carries a high risk of addiction. Cocaine’s rapid and powerful effect on the brain that produces euphoria and intensified sensory perception has led to it becoming exceptionally popular among recreational drugs with alarming consequences to long-term mental health.

It seems that there may be genetic factors that determine the likelihood or severity of addiction but it is the inevitable result of repeated use. Breaking a cocaine habit is extremely difficult and no medication exists that can effectively reverse dependency. For this reason, the main hope for a recovery invariably lies with a programme of cocaine rehab.

All programmes start with detoxification but best practice will offer a combination of medical, psychological and spiritual interventions under expert supervision.

Principles Of Christian Drug Rehab Gaining Acceptance

There is now overwhelming evidence to support the value of the role of spiritual support in a programme of drug rehabilitation. This important requirement, though long overlooked, has now become an integral part of the treatment process in many rehab centres with very positive results.

Not surprisingly, Christian drug rehab facilities have long addressed this vital area and their performance has attracted the attention of researchers. Their findings now confirm that a holistic regimen of therapy combining traditional medical and psychological treatments with spiritual care definitely results in improved recovery.

The Christian principles now adopted by some of the best rehab programmes in their counselling are playing an important role in the vital task of re-integrating the recovering addicts into society by promoting feelings of trust, respect, self-worth and confidence without overplaying religious dogma.

HIV/Aids Treatments | UNAIDS | South Africa

Zambia, as one of the poorest countries in Africa struggles to keep the spreading of HIV and AIDS at bay. The country relies heavily on donors to fund their AIDS treatments. As such should any of the donors withdraw their assistance and involvement, the complete progress already made against the disease in the country can be wiped out. The Southern African AIDS Trust operating in Zambia supports community AIDS treatment programmes in addition to the building of HIV awareness amongst community members. Regional and grass root level involvement in prevention as well as AID treatment programmes should become priority in the country in order to win the fight against the dreadful disease.

HIV Treatments In Rwanda Military To Reduce Spreading Of The Disease

There have been a number of successful HIV treatment programs in Africa throughout the past few years. One example of the success of HIV treatments is that of the Rwandan Military where an HIV treatment program is funded by the USA Department and overseen through a university by the name of “Charles Drew University.” Their ambitious and rather innovative HIV treatment programme has now fully reached every infected soldier in the country. At the same time there are institutions in African countries which have no proper HIV treatments in place including some of the prisons in Uganda. It is imperative to develop a well structured plan for prevention and cure of the disease.

HIV Awareness | UNAIDS | South Africa

South Africa is the country with the highest rate of HIV infection despite an increase in HIV awareness campaigns. Although certainly a far way from winning the fight against HIV, the numerous HIV awareness programmes in the country targeting the youth, ensure that the stigma surrounding HIV infection and also the myths regarding the methods of infection are addressed. Elsewhere in Africa, HIV awareness programmes and prevention plans have made inroads in the fight against the disease. Tanzania is the latest country to be applauded for their success in increasing the availability of antiretroviral drugs to infected persons, limiting the risks of mother to child transmission of HIV, and in communicating to the youth the importance of HIV prevention methods.

HIV Leadership Is Needed In The Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Strong HIV leadership is needed from African countries to tackle the pandemic of HIV/AIDS head on. Although numerous countries have made inroads in the fight against HIV/AIDS because of strong HIV leadership displayed, there are still countries which take on the role of victim waiting for someone to fix the problem, rather than actively provide HIV leadership through policies, government awareness programs, treatment accessibility, and general information to the public. Uganda has been applauded on several occasions for its efforts to eradicate the disease. At the same time though, prisons in the country are seen as breeding grounds for disease and HIV infections because of the unhygienic state of their prisons.

Hiv Prevention | UNAIDS | South Africa

Tanzania was recently applauded by the UN deputy secretary Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro for their outstanding efforts to stop the spreading of the disease. Tanzania has put in place several HIV prevention strategies of which an awareness campaign amongst the youth has played an important role as well as the setting up of HIV Prevention programmes at clinics to minimize the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children. In addition Tanzania has also made available antiretroviral drugs to other citizens infected with the disease. With their HIV prevention efforts on all levels they are making inroads against the disease. Globally more than six million people received antiretroviral treatments in 2010.

AIDS Awareness In Tanzania On The Increase

Tanzania has recently made headlines with their AIDS awareness programmes which have proven to be tremendously successful. The youth of country are enthusiastic in fighting the disease and show incredible responsibility in their approach regarding HIV/AIDS. The country has tackled the problem heads on and thereby increasing not only AIDS awareness, but also responsible living to prevent the spreading of the disease. More than 51% of the people living with HIV or AIDS in the country receive the required antiretroviral treatment. This is truly a remarkable change from the 2004 figure of absolutely no one receiving the treatment. They have also improved their mother to child HIV transmission prevention programmes reaching more than two thirds of infected mothers in 2010.
