Headway saw the need for brain injury survivors and their families, and they were established in 1981, with various branches throughout the world.
At Headway they focus on two main areas:
- rehabilitation
- occupational activity programmes
They offer five days a week Rehabilitation and Occupational Activity Programmes and are available to all those over 18 years of age who have sustained an Acquired Brain Injury from a motor vehicle accident, gunshot, stroke or any other trauma to the brain.
They request a doctor’s referral letter confirming the injury, after which they do an assessment to determine where the patient is at in terms of recovery and the necessary therapy required.
Based on their findings the therapy process is mapped out and started.

- Speech Therapy
- Clinical Psychology
- Occupational Activity Programme
- Support Groups

The Academy is registered and accredited and was established in 2000 to provide medical education and professional development to Health Care Practitioners.
The Academy is fully equipped with the latest equipment, digital projection, advanced life support manikins, adult, child and infant, an array of CPR manikins, ECG monitors capable of defibrillation, cardioversion and external cardiac pacing as well as automated external defibrillators.
They also provide courses over a 1, 2 or 3 day period, weekends, 3 or 4 times each month accommodating between 10 and 12 candidates at each course.
All Courses provided by the Academy have been accredited by the Health Professionals Council of South Africa.
