HIV Care And Support Play An Integral Role In Prevention Of Further Infections

It is essential to not only provide HIV care and support in the form of antiretroviral therapy, but also to ensure education programs, home assistance, and financial support to families severely affected by HIV infections. Proper HIV care should include home programs where family members can take care of infected persons. To ensure such programs work, it is essential to involve governments who should allocate adequate resources such as care centres, workers, and funding. A recent report suggests that more than five million patients receive HIV care by means of antiretroviral therapy. There are, however, still too many people who do not have access to such HIV care. Two thirds of infected persons are still not receiving antiretroviral treatments.

UNAIDS RST ESA HIV Support And Information Programs

As UNAIDS has launched an ambitious, yet reachable goal and strategy to minimize HIV infections for the period 2011-2015. An integral part of the strategy is HIV support and influencing of decision making by governments to ensure greater collaboration to fight HIV infections. Antiretroviral therapy is a form of HIV support, but so is the setting up of centres where early diagnosis of HIV and related illnesses can be made. In addition, another challenge forms part of the strategy, that of setting up adequate HIV care and support systems for infected persons and their immediate families from the moment the persons are diagnosed with HIV infection.
